6 Habits That Harm Your Teeth (And How to Break Them): Brushing Too Hard

The habit: Brushing for two minutes twice a day is one of the best habits you can get into. Just make sure you’re not trying too hard. “Brushing with a hard toothbrush, or brushing too hard, can damage teeth and irritate gums,” says Dr. Matthew Messina.

The solution: Use a soft toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Acceptance at the proper pressure. “Don’t think ‘scrub.’  Think ‘massage,’” he says. “Save the hard toothbrush for cleaning the grout in the bathroom tile.”

6 Habits That Harm Your Teeth (And How to Break Them): Nail Biting

The habit: This nervous habit can chip teeth and impact your jaw. “Placing your jaw for long periods of time in a protruding position can place pressure on it, which is associated with jaw dysfunction,” says Dr. Ruchi Sahota.

The solution: Bitter-tasting nail polishes, stress reduction and setting small, realistic goals can help. If certain situations are triggers, hold something to keep your fingers busy.

Dental Gum Disease

Gum Disease Can Contribute to Serious Health Conditions

Medical research has determined that gum disease has a link to serious conditions like diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. According to the American Dental Association, over three-quarters of the American population has periodontal infection at some level. Dentists consider this to be an epidemic, due to the seriousness of the infection and the percentage of the population afflicted.

The bacteria in the gums travel throughout the bloodstream, affecting the normal functioning of major organs. The American Academy of Periodontology reports, "studies found periodontal infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of premature, underweight births, and pose a serious threat to people whose health is already compromised due to diabetes and respiratory diseases."

6 Habits That Harm Your Teeth (And How to Break Them): Grinding and Clenching

The habit: “This can cause chipping or cracking of the teeth, as well as muscle tenderness or joint pain,” Dr. Messina says. “You might also feel like you can’t open your mouth wide or chew with pain.”

The solution: “Relaxation exercises and staying aware makes a difference,” he says. A nighttime mouthguard can also help. “You’ll have less tooth damage, less pain and muscle soreness and better sleep.”

Dental Overdentures

Overdentures to the Rescue

Wearing dentures can mean having to deal with the annoyances of poorly fitting dentures that slip and tilt when eating or speaking. Adhesives don't work as well as they should, and the same problems continue. Dr. Marino is pleased to present an alternative to the use of messy adhesives. Overdentures will keep your dentures in place and let you eat whatever you like. By the strategic placement of just a few dental implants, your dentures are anchored in place. They snap off for cleaning and are easy to re-insert. Come in to see if you are a candidate for overdentures that will add a new quality to your life.
